Agustin Carstens is a leading liberal economist who has just been proposed to take place left by Strauss Kahn as IMF leader. Mexico has also joined the wave of ideas that claim that the IMF should stop being led by the Europeans and with other countries such as China and Thailand, has suggested that the new leader comes from an emerging country.
Carstens could actually be a good candidate because you have worked before in the IMF. From 2003 to 2006 he worked as deputy managing director of agency and the way work was always well qualified by their peers. Agustin Carstens has a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago and according to Ernesto Cordero, Secretary of Finance of Mexico, Carstens has enough international experience to this at the height of the post.
Agustin Carstens is currently the president of the Bank of Mexico, A position he has held since early last year and was assigned to the time that the crisis began. His calling card: has been overcome Mexico’s economy in difficult times to manage to maintain the inflation target proposal 3% for this year. Another of his major achievements was to reform the pension system which has been highly acclaimed by many specialists in the country.
Of course, not everything was rosy, and in 2009 after some statements that would affect Mexico not crisis, had to witness a decline of 6.1% of GDP, and has recently been strongly criticized for suggesting that was necessary tax increase in Mexico.
